Useful ways to reuse old carpet

Most carpet is made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. If you’re redecorating or replacing your carpet consider some easy and creative ways to put it to good use instead of immediately sending it off to the landfill. Maybe you’re building a backyard playhouse for your children or looking to make your dog’s doghouse a little more comfortable there are several things you can do with old carpet to make sure it’s used to its fullest capacity before it gets sent off to take up precious space in the local landfill. If you are planning to build a play house you can use your old carpet to cover the floors. If there are wooden or plastic steps that could become slippery cut strips of carpet to fit over each step and provide lighting by installing a push light to avoid potentially hazardous slips and falls. Cut out sections and place them at basement, garage or backdoor entrances to the house as a place to leave shoes and boots and to help cut down on unwanted debris being tracked into your house. If you don’t have or need floor mats in your car you can use sections of your old carpet to help extend the life of your car’s interior and trunk. If you have a cat you can make a scratching post by wrapping and securing a piece of old carpet to a piece of wood.
Check Earth911.org to find a nearby recycler or get in touch with some nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity that may accept relatively-clean carpet for reuse. |
